At the core of Relay Dance Collective is a desire to give back to our community in any way we can.
In addition to offering scholarships to Dance Fremont! students this fall, we've been having a blast performing at schools, nursing homes and community centers in May and June. We hope that these performances may bring a smile to some faces who don't normally have access to dance.
First, Relay Dance Collective performed for enthusiastic elementary and middle-school students at Pinehurst K-8 (formerly AS#1) on May 28, 2013.
Amanda, Austin and I were delighted to see former teachers from Summit K-12, (where we graduated from high school). Additionally, it was a treat for me to return to the Pinehurst building, where I went to school for nine years when it was still AS#1.
The three of us think fondly of our time in Seattle's alternative, arts-oriented schools. It was Summit and AS#1 where, as young women, we got to choreograph and star in school musicals and plays, dive headfirst into art projects, and lay the foundation for the quirky, creative people we've become.
At our performance, the students were such a wonderful and receptive audience. We were delighted by what intelligent and interesting questions they asked during a Q&A period afterward. Thank you so much Pinehurst! We'd love to come back!
On Saturday, June 8th, the women of Relay piled in a car and headed north on I-5 for a performance at Bellingham High School's Dance Blast -- a fundraiser for the school's dance team. The predominately student-based audience cheered to hear that the music from our dance was produced by two Bellingham High School graduates -- Matt Goodwin and Casey Gainor of The Bad Tenants! As you know, I've been working with The Bad Tenants to develop a jazzy, Beyonce-inspired dance. We'll be performing this with The Tenants at our big show this summer, but it's also served as a nice piece to bring on the road even without live musical accompaniment. After the show, we hit the town dancing at Rumors and went to the Shakedown for some fantastic music by Bellingham's Sunday Cypher crew -- the hip-hop community that includes The Bad Tenants, and many other talented groups (some of whom it would be great to collab with someday!). We held it down at the front of the stage for performances by Loke, The Bad Tenants, Dinofour and Brie Boogie, Care Package, Jenny Potts and IG88 to name a few!
When is our next performance? Sunday, June 16th (Father's Day) at Nikkei Concerns' Seattle Keiro nursing home. After that, time to hunker down and really get ready for our show in August!
