April 19-21, 2013 was a productive and busy weekend for the women of Relay. And that's putting it pretty mildy. We're humbled, and admittedly, shocked in the best way possible, to report that we raised more than $6,000 this weekend. We may be exhausted, but our hearts are so very full. Here's why:
On Friday, we held a successful event at Lisa Harris Gallery in Pike Place Market, bringing home more than $3,000. We had such a blast with all of our friends and family at this classy soiree in Pike Place Market!
On Saturday, with 42 backers, and $2,676, we beat the pants off of our $1,500 Kickstarter goal with our successfully-funded (and then some!) project. We were so blown away by the support we received.
And on Sunday, we did the very thing that we love to do, the very reason for the Kickstarter and the fundraiser: WE DANCED! Relay Dance Collective performed at Battle for the Dance Belt (Congratulations to Dance Belt winners, Expose: Eastside! ). Thank you to our family and friends, new and old alike, who have shown their support in a multitude of ways this weekend. From volunteering to work the door, serve food or bartend; to cooking; or donating items for our raffle and silent auction; giving money to our Kickstarter, or coming out to watch us perform, or simply following our goings-on via Facebook, it's been awe-inspiring. As RDC dancer Tess Wendel put it, your generosity has made it so we might be able to wear something at our show, like a costume! (The alternative would probably have been too scandalous, anyway). You have clothed us with costumes, but also with love, support and encouragement. We aim to take your generosity and harness it in the form of our three scholarships for Dance Fremont! students -- a central tenet to our mission statement of giving back. Additionally, because of your financial generosity, we will be able to fairly compensate talented artists involved in our show, including out live band, The Bad Tenants, and our choreographers.
There are so many people to thank: Huge shout-out to the Mortons, Morgans, Hillock-Sextons, Nomura-Henley-Elsbree-Gainor clan and the Oie's. We'd especially like to acknowledge Tess, and Lisa Harris! We could not have pulled off our fundraiser without these intelligent, giving and truly amazing women. Lisa was generous enough to donate wine to our event, as well as lend us her beautiful gallery (not to mention, rearrange everything on our behalf!). Our guests were truly blown away by Tess' eloquence, warmth and charm as our MC for the evening. Tess' journey from a major brain surgery last fall, to regaining her strength, coordination and confidence as a dancer is truly inspiring and will never cease to give us much-needed perspective on what's most important in life.
