Markeith Wiley, the 2014 City Arts Future Lister and Artistic Director of The New Animals has been in Seattle for just short of a decade. Wiley's works, as well as The New Animals, have been seen at On The Boards, Velocity, SIDF and several other theaters in Seattle. Previously, Wiley has conducted college residencies, one at Cal State San Luis Obispo and the other at Riverside Community College, as well as toured in Idaho and California. At home in Seattle, Wiley has worked with KT Niehoff, DeLouRue Presents and Wade Madsen. He and The New Animals plan to head to the east coast later this year. Some in Relay Dance Collective have been lucky enough to work with Markeith in the past. But we're thrilled to be commissioning him as a company for the first time. His provocative new piece: "RDC's Untitled EP" is sassy and intelligent; it's fun watching the dancers' personalities shine through, and it's obvious that the creative process was infused with their uniqueness and input. Hip-hop is not necessarily an art form one would normally characterize as reserved or understated, but Markeith at times juxtaposes a minimal movement--the raise of an eyebrow or the flick of a wrist--against the lush, soulful voice of Lauryn Hill or a head-bop worthy '90s beat. These movements are often minimal, but the attention to detail is powerful and makes a strong impact. We can't wait for you to see it in RDC3!
What excites you artistically? Change. Collaborations. Living in the age of the post-disciplinary.
What was the inspiration for your piece? The driving force for this work was the theme of anti-hip hop. Like an anti-hero. (See Batman).
What's your spirit animal? Koala Bear
What's your guilty pleasure? Going to a sold-out horror movie by myself and sitting in the middle of it all.
If you were a color, you'd be: Midnight Blue
How can we learn more about your work in dance? Oh! I love chatting over a drink or come see me at NW New Works June 5-7 or THIS or you can follow me on Vimeo. So many ways!
What should we be paying attention to in the dance world? I am the wrong person to ask this question. I would say pay attention to whats going on in the world and that might inform you on what to pay attention to in the dance world. _________________________________________ RDC3 7:30 p.m., April 3-5, 2015 Velocity Dance Center 1621 12th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98122 Contemporary, Seattle-based dance company Relay Dance Collective presents "RDC3," an evening of vibrant, powerful and diverse dances. is happening April 3-5 at Velocity Dance Center featuring a special guest performance by ARC Dance Company.
