We are delighted to have Ciera dancing with Relay this season. Her upbeat attitude and commitment to the movement can't be beat!
You're new to Relay. Welcome! Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hi! I'm Ciera Shaver, a native of Boise, Idaho. I moved to Seattle about 3 years ago and am loving its vibrant arts community. I currently practice architecture at Board & Vellum in Capitol Hill, where I'm only a few blocks from Velocity. I'm lucky that my two deepest passions are a mere 10 minute walk from each other!
Tell us about some of the dance projects you've been involved in recently. Most recently I performed with Converge Dance Festival (Spring 2017) and Inlay (Fall 2017). In Converge I got to perform a piece by Brittany Clements, and with Inlay I performed in pieces by Hailey Burt and Forthun + Rome Dance Theater.
What's your favorite post rehearsal snack? Oranges... anything fresh & juicy!
Top three loves outside of dance? Architecture, skiing, backpacking (anything outside, really)
You're a skier as well as a dancer. Do you ever worry about getting injured on the slopes and that impacting your dancing? Absolutely. I try to make safe choices when I ski by analyzing snow pack and weather reports, and I always ski with a partner. Outdoor sports are unpredictable and often times out of your control, so being cautious and aware in the arenas that I can control is a big priority when I'm on the mountain.
What excites you about the two pieces you are in? Both of the pieces I get to dance in make me feel really strong. Dance is an after-work creative outlet for me, and I love spending time in the studio working on the minute details of a tough piece of movement with like-minded, passionate dancers. Both pieces are uniquely stimulating, both creatively and physically, and it is a blast to challenge myself through movement.
Tell us about your dance and architecture thesis etc. As a life-long lover of dance and architecture, I began to see a clear connection between movement and physical form. This culminated in my Architecture Master’s thesis project, which analyzed architecture found in dance, and dance found in architecture. It was fascinating to find correlations between some of my favorite architects and choreographers - movement and architecture are everywhere! You can check out my thesis project here.
Any other dance projects on the horizon that we should know about? I'm taking the summer off from rehearsing and performing to backpack a section of the Camino in Spain with my dad. Planning on auditioning for whatever I can later this summer and fall!
Come see Ciera in Relay Dance Collective's show Encore at Yaw Theater in Georgetown. Shows are May 18 and 19 at 7:30 and May 20 at 2:30, tickets are $20.
