By Gabrielle Gainor Running Relay Dance Collective has allowed Austin Sexton to come into full bloom as a person. This project was the creative spark she needed to find her way back to the art form that's always fed her soul, but that she's been taken away from, or walked away from, and come back to at various points in her life. My beautiful friend has not had it easy; but I admire the way she chooses not to be a victim, and instead chooses to surround herself with positivity. At first, Austin simply needed to be around others' good energy, which she was able to reflect out into the world. Now, she is generating powerful vibes of her own. It's hard to believe that when we started the collective in 2012, Austin was working a low-paying job that wasn't making her happy, and had had no consistent dance in her life since her years of intense study and preparation as a teen. In just three years, Austin has danced for a handful of significant choreographers, performed at Seattle International Dance Festival and at SAM Re-Mixed with choreographer Xaviera Vandermay and 3rd Shift Dance; worked as a Choreography Intern for Seattle Children's Theater, and has fully transitioned to making her living off of teaching dance at studios and in private schools in the Puget Sound. She is a living example of the transformative power of the arts, and she continues to be an efficient architect in creating community among dancers in Seattle, and an inspiring role model to her students and fellow artists.
Austin's role in RDC3 Relay Dance Collective co-founder and Rehearsal Director; I coordinate casting, scheduling, act as a liaison with artists, run music, take over cleaning dances in place of the choreographer, and basically take care of all aspects of running the collective that happen within the dance studio. For RDC3, I'm also dancing in a new work by Markeith Wiley, as well as "End of a Year by Eva Stone," "Foreplay Longtime" by Diana Cardiff and created a new work of my own.
